How to Write a Breakup Letter, Kindly and Clearly

Whether you're sending it or just writing it for yourself, putting a breakup into words can bring a strange kind of clarity.

1. Be direct early

Avoid burying the point under paragraphs of context. Clarity, even when it hurts, is a form of respect.

2. Separate "why" from "blame"

You can explain what wasn't working without turning it into an accusation. "This wasn't working for me" lands differently than "you never..."

3. Acknowledge what was real

Even an ending can hold gratitude for what existed before it. This isn't required, but it often makes both people feel less erased.

"This isn't about what was wrong. Some of it was really good. But I don't think it's right anymore."

4. Don't promise what you can't keep

If you're unsure about staying in touch, don't say "let's stay friends" just to soften it. Say only what's actually true.

Whether you send it or keep it for yourself, writing it can help.
